A. William Bradford

Thesis: In a excerpt from William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation, although the puritans experience hardships in there voyage to America, in their initial arrival and there dealing with the Indians, they maintain their reverence to God and one another.

"And here is to be noted a special providence of God, and a great mercy to this poor people, that here they got seed to plant them corn the next year, or else they might have starved, for they had none nor any likelihood to get any till the season had been past, as the sequel did manifest. Neither it is likely they had had this, if the first voyage had not been made, for the ground was now all covered with snow and hard frozen; but the Lord is never wanting unto His in their greatest needs; let His holy name have all the praise."

In this passage it shows there devotion to God. Everything they work for, they take no credit for and owe it all to God for having great mercy. This passage gives a better understanding, how they think and why they live there life to please God.

Anne Bradstreet

"To My Dear and Loving Husband"

If ever two were one, then surely we.

If ever man were lov'd by wife, then thee;

If ever wife was happy in a man,

Compare with me ye women if you can.

I prize thy love more than whole Mines of gold,

Or all the riches that the East doth hold.

My love is such that Rivers cannot quench,

Nor ought but love from thee, give recompence.

Thy love is such I can no way repay,

The heavens reward thee manifold I pray.

Then while we live, in love let's so persever,

That when we live no more, we may live ever.

This poem impressed me most, because Puritans weren't really aloud to put anyone on a pedestal like Anne did for husband. She wrote this poem to him telling him that he meant the world to her and she would give anything for him. Being a puritan she wasn't suppose to think like this. the most important thing in her life was God. Having her set of beliefs this type of writing wasn't allowed, but she went against it to show her love for him.

Dear Dairy,

Today my husband left for another one for his business trips, this time he will be done for three weeks. A shorter one then usual, i miss him so much when he gone. There is not much i can do about, but i know that he is being faithful. He took the same vows that I did. When the kids are quiet it gives me a chance to think. I would give up everything i own for my children and husband and of course God. There is nothing on this earth that comes before my family.

As children grow up their mothers often feel as if they’re losing them. In this cartoon a mother takes her son to daycare and he cries for her. The mother feels as if she is being smothered by the responsibility of always having to provide for her children. Likewise Anne Bradstreet had to take care of eight children, not leaving anytime for herself. Next shown in the cartoon is the mother dropping off her kid, and he simply says goodbye, the mother feels as if her son does not love her anymore because he does not cry. When children grow up they become less attached to their mother, and it may seem as there moving on and forgetting them. In the “Reference to Her Children” by Anne Bradstreet she feels as if her children are growing up and leaving her slowly. There is nothing a mother can do to stop her children from growing up.

In my collage I put a man Going throw an hand. The hand represents the hand of god, that is letting him fall due to the sins he has committed. Under the hand is pictures of hell. Fire and heartache, which is promised in "In the Hands Of a Angry God".

The Slave Narrative

Essential Question:
During this time the American Dream was to be free. Coming to the New world everyone had hopes of golds and freedom. After being suppressed in there homeland they just wanted a new start in the New World. Unfortunately for Africans they came believing they would prosper but became slaves.


Political Cartoon:

The fear of the unknown during the era of slavery led to a division between races. Shown in the cartoon, is a colored man trying to help a drowning white man. Instead of letting the man drown he risks his own life to help him. In this cartoon you can see the fright and insecurity in the white man’s face. Since they treat the slaves a cretin way, it is a surprise that a man of color would let him. By treating the slaves as animals, the white men cannot pass the difference in color.
